Foldables Are Nearly Ideal. They Now Need to Be More Affordable

  • The emergence of foldable phones has witnessed significant evolution and diversification in their form, factors, and functionalities. Samsung, a pioneer in this field, expanded the cover screen on its devices, enhancing usability for notification responses and serving as a compact alternative to a smartwatch, primarily for accessing condensed information. In 2023, competitors like Motorola's Razr+ and Oppo's Find N3 Flip innovatively utilized expansive cover screens, allowing for comprehensive app displays and resembling traditional phone layouts, albeit in different orientations.

Diverging from Samsung's slender candy bar book-style fold, Google introduced the Pixel Fold with dimensions akin to the original Oppo Find N 5G, offering a wider design conducive to reading and video consumption. OnePlus entered the frame with the OnePlus Open, featuring a 6.8-inch cover screen, striking a balance between Samsung's and Google's designs, catering to varied preferences with distinct merits in each model.

Enhancements in foldable software have been pivotal, notably Samsung's One UI modifications to Android, enabling better app support and introducing features like "Flex Mode" for enhanced functionality at specific fold angles. OnePlus' approach with the Open, facilitating a scrolling screen of vertical apps and additional options for multitasking, stands as a noteworthy utilization of expanded screen real estate.

An essential development in foldable technology is Google's heightened involvement, optimizing apps for folding screens, benefitting from both the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet launches, and fostering improved app appearance and usability across different foldable devices.

Despite these advancements, the steep price of foldable phones remains a lingering obstacle. While the complexity of foldable screen technology justifies the costs, the current pricing places these devices beyond the reach of most consumers. Nevertheless, market trends indicate a growing interest in foldable, with forecasts predicting a surge in popularity, particularly with the anticipated launch of more affordable entry-level foldable phones in the coming years.

However, even if foldable manages to capture a modest segment of the smartphone market by 2027, the projected numbers pale compared to traditional smartphone sales by major brands like Apple and Samsung. Consequently, while foldable might not become the predominant future of smartphones, they are poised to persist as a distinct category of mobile devices. The trajectory of foldable phones, evolving from a niche market to a more consolidated niche, signifies a promising mobile device option that is expected to become more financially accessible in the future—an impressive feat considering the initial disbelief in the feasibility of folding screens just a few years ago.
